gentle reminder in this cold-n-flu season to not take mucinex if you’re also taking an SSRI (antidepressant)

always google “drug interactions [insert drug names]” to make sure that combining meds won’t make you more sick

mucinex DM specifically

the dextromethorphan reacts badly with the serotonin and can cause really bad anxiety and insomnia. it can also cause something called serotonin syndrome, or serotonin poisoning.

regular mucinex is ok, but you should always double check medication reactions!

Had a mild bout of serotonin syndrome this year and lemme tell ya folks it is NOT FUN and in serious situations can be fatal. Always follow medication dosing guidelines and ask if you aren’t sure!

Also true of Robitussin DM. Anything with DM in the name, actually.

The other day at the mall i saw a 15 year old sitting in a Claire’s piercing booth and it took every fiber in my being to not just grab her and take her to the actual, clean and sanitary and not guaranteed to fuck up your ears tattoo shop literally next door. Like I was frantic. Snakes manifested in my house

Piercing guns almost ALWAYS cause infections

They hurt more because they jam dull jewelry into your ear

Needles from a professional are designed to allow for minimum damage thus less pain.

The people working there literally have no idea what the fuck they’re doing and just guess it with a 1 hour training video vs a professional who trained under a mentor for at least a year and has a passion in the craft

They use bad metal for healings (copper, silver, etc) that can irritate ears. Surgical grade steel should be the only thing in your healing piercings

They put them on way to tight, causing swelling issues. Swelling is normal and piercings should be large enough to allow for that

They give you shit aftercare advice and cleaner (literally just buy saline solution at Spencer’s or hot topic for 8 dollars at the most and don’t touch them at all)

If done on cartilage it can LITERALLY SHATTER YOUR EARS

Please if any young girls in your family want their ears pierced take them to actual professional and don’t trust piercing guns. If a professional says your kid is too young (I.e a fucking baby) then trust their professional judgement. It costs more but you are getting essentially a art piece from a highly trained professional who knows what they’re doing vs a part time min wage employee who had 1 hour training on how to pierce ears.

I literally wrote an entire essay in college why piercing guns should be banned with pictures and my professor told me she was so interested in my topic and had no idea and even googled the topic herself out of curiosity and was horrified on the amount of damage they case

I am a licensed piercing professional and this is all sound and accurate advice. Get your piercings done by a licensed professional at a reputable shop. Not at the mall kiosk that uses piercing guns. Not by your friend who ordered a kit off of Amazon.

vinegar and bleach makes chlorine gas, which is highly toxic

ammonia and bleach makes chloramine, which is highly toxic

rubbing alcohol and bleach makes chloroform, which is highly toxic

hydrogen peroxide and vinegar makes peracetic/peroxyacetic acid, which can be highly corrosive

be careful about your cleaning products and dont get yourself injured or potentially killed ok

why it so dangerous to be clean

Because cleaning tends to kill things like tiny organisms and if you clean too hardcore it will kill big things like people

Due to recent changes in the fan content policy, it is now legally shakey ground for anyone to draw adults only content of Magic: The Gathering, Dungeons & Dragons, and Axis & Allies branded content.

And to this point, I will not be doing so for the foreseeable future. This should not change my personal works as non of my medieval fantasy works derive from D&D trademarks. It has, however, cut two major IPs off from requests, commissions, and patreon rewards.

Don’t sleep on this clause of the new policy:

Your Fan Content must be free for others (including Wizards) to view, access, share, and use without paying you anything, obtaining your approval, or giving you credit.

>use

Fuck Hasbro.

uh…………..

so no porn is essentially what they’re saying.

No they are saying that they can freely distribute your art content without crediting you or compensating you.  AND SO CAN EVERYONE ELSE  You aren’t allowed to take commissions EVER.  And if you try to fight it legally because all of this falls under Fair Use they will have you up to your neck in fines and fees.  Which is, in fact, ILLEGAL.  But they can get away with it because money.  Hasbro has a history of this.

Please actually read the page.  I promise you its not in legaleese.

This is actually extremely detrimental to a lot of artists.

“Fan Content includes fan art, videos, podcasts, blogs, websites, streaming content, tattoos, altars to your cleric’s deity, etc.“

So if I’m understanding this correctly, then even if YouTube hadn’t been working to demonetize creator content, this policy would mean D&D podcasts & vids – like Critical Role and The Adventure Zone – can’t be used to make money.

Fuck Hasbro.

WELP.

If anybody ever wants a commission of a certain tabletop roleplay character, just…y’know…don’t tell me what it’s from. Obviously completely original character no relation to anything, right?…>_>

If you do need to namedrop a system, say “Fantasy d20″. It’s the overarching supercategory that includes all of the Open Gaming Licnese knockoffs. If you want to move away from D&D, you should look into them anyway…

Pathfinder (3.5+)
Castles & Crusades (AD&D2E)
Basic Fantasy RPG, Lamentations of the Famle Princess (BX D&D + homebrew)
Labyrinth Lord (BX D&D or AD&D1E depending on the splatbooks)

OSRIC (AD&D1E)
Swords & Wizardry (OD&D)

Or you could just start playing a game that isn’t based on D&D like GURPS Dungeon Fantasy,  Mouseguard,  Earthdawn, Warhammer Fantasy RPG, Ironclaw, Palladium Fantasy, EXALTED.

Or use generics like GURPS, HERO, Fuzion, Savage Worlds, Fate, etc.

With the way Hasbro’s been mismanaging WotC, they kinda need to lose market share anyway.

Hackmaster! Don’t forget Hackmaster, it’s a great system and very akin to D&D but with many very notable improvements. XO

Just gonna add Dungeon World, Pugmire, MERPS and the fan-made elderscrolls tabletop to the list

Did some deeper research into this and just gonna put some quick notes to ease everyone’s fears:

-stuff like donations, add revenue and sponsorships aren’t affected so if your DND art comes from something like patreon or one of those “I’ll draw a picture for you if you donate 5$” things you’re 100% safe and Critical Role is sponsored by DND Beyond currently so they’re 200% safe, as well as the adventure zone even though they haven’t played dnd in a good couple months since they’re based on ad revenue

-Under the open game license, you can make any content and not have it be low key owned by wizards of the coast as long as it does not have a specific setting or uses your own original setting

-These changes have been in effect since November of 2017, so you can see how hard they’re cracking down on all this via experience or looking back on the past half year or so.

-Joining the DM’s Guild takes off some restrictions like making money off of your content if you make art or homebrew and lets you use Forgotten Realms and Ravenloft without legal repercussions (and probably more to follow)

In short, they literally say that their lawyers already have their hands tied so as long as you don’t walk up to Mister Coast Wizard himself and yell that you’re breaking the law, you should be good and again, just put a lil eraser to the “DND” part of commissions and you should be a-ok

1. Fist: Make a fist around the epi-pen, don’t place your thumb/fingers over either end

2. Flick the blue cap off

3. Fire. Press down into the outer thigh (the big muscle in there), hold for 10 seconds before removing (the orange cap will cover the needle). Bare skin is best but the epi-pen will go through clothing. Avoid pockets and seams.

– Ring an ambulance even if everything seems to be fine!

Oh my god.
So as someone who has to carry an epipen EVERYWHERE I am so happy to see that there’s an info post about them.
Like in the extreme case that I can’t inject myself, somebody else would have to do it, but nobody knows how to do it! Thank you, this may just save my life some day.

Don’t be wimpy about it, either. I know friends who are like, “but idk if I could stab you with a needle!” Please stab me with the needle, don’t be hesitant about it.

In my case (I can’t speak for all allergies), an epi buys me 20 minutes of breathing to get to the hospital. It is not a magic bullet, it’s a few critical minutes to help get me where I need to go.

For those who don’t know, people with serious food allergies carry epinephrine which is an adrenaline shot just in case they have anaphylaxis, which is a life threatening allergic attack. This shot is life-saving and must be administered to someone who is having an anaphylactic attack as SOON AS POSSIBLE, because an extra waited minute could mean their life.

It doesn’t hurt much at all to use this needle. The first time I used mine, I didn’t even feel it. But be sure to stab it IN THE OUTER THIGH. Do not stick it anywhere else or you could seriously hurt or kill someone. Just right to the outside of the thigh and then call the ambulance – even if your friend starts doing better, they could have a biphasic reaction, meaning a reaction that comes back (or they may need a second dose, be on the look out). If your friend has an epipen, then they have an epipen trainer that doesn’t have a needle and you can try it out just to be sure you know how to use the real thing if you have to. I’d also advise holding it a few more seconds then 10, maybe go for 14 just to be sure all the medicine is administered and that you didn’t count too fast – that’s what I did.

Here’s a graphic of where to stick it:

put these things in your car right now

glumshoe:

With much of North America experiencing severe winter weather this week, anyone doing any kind of travel should be prepared with a winter emergency kit.

-A warm coat, blanket, gloves, socks, hat, and hand warmers. Those thermal mylar blankets are a compact and affordable addition.
-Ice scraper and brush
-Jumper cables
-A foldable shovel
-A flashlight
-Emergency road flares or reflectors, to place well behind your vehicle
-First aid kit
-Multitool
-Tire chains, tow strap
-Flashlight, extra batteries
-Matches, lighter, candles
-Fresh water (bring it with you each time, if you just leave it in the car it’ll freeze)
-High-energy snack food
-Safety absorbent, sand, cat litter, or road salt to provide traction for your wheels
-a hand-crank radio
-More than half a tank of gas (to prevent freezing condensation and fuel blockages)

Some of these things can get kind of expensive, but they can be life-saving and are cheaper than an emergency room and/or a car tow.

Cardiac distress symptoms in women

carolyn-claire:

pictures-to-prove-it:

solarine:

In the wake of Carrie Fisher’s death four days after she suffered a massive heart attack, one thing that was reported by some news outlets was that she had been in “significant distress” on the flight. We don’t know the exact details of this, but in my experience as an EMT, it often means “hysterical woman having a panic attack and thinking she’s dying…*woman dies* …oops, guess she really was dying.”

It is SO IMPORTANT to remember that many women present in what medicine considers an ‘atypical’ manner for heart attack, but it actually IS typical…for women. Women are more than twice as likely to die from cardiac emergencies, not because our physiology is that much different than men and thus gives us a worse chance at survival (it’s actually better if treated promptly and adequately), but because our symptoms are more likely to go unrecognized or to be dismissed entirely.

Thus, please take a moment to review and pass on this list of cardiac distress symptoms as seen in women:

Shortness of breath – This is the most common one. If a woman, especially one without prior history of respiratory issues or shortness of breath, seems to be having trouble catching her breath and/or complains of such, pay very close attention. If she continues to feel winded after sitting or laying down, it’s probably time to call for help.

Feeling of impending doom – This can range from a sense of general unease to a full-blown panic attack. This one is extremely important, and is the symptom most commonly disregarded by doctors and hospital staff. If a woman tells you that she feels ‘not quite right,’ or like something terrible is about to happen, or that she’s about to die, LISTEN TO HER FFS.

Nausea and “indigestion” – Also common. Heart attacks frequently present as a feeling of vague nausea or indigestion, but unlike typical heartburn, antacids and other OTC treatments will not alleviate the symptoms.

Hiccups – Unexplained hiccups, especially if seen with any of the other symptoms listed above, can be indicative of heart muscle that is being acutely or chronically starved of oxygen.  The exact mechanism isn’t known, but it’s thought that the enzymes released by the dying muscle irritate the pericardium and adjacent diaphragm, causing spasms in the healthy muscle.

Fatigue – This is another commonly seen symptom, and is often overlooked or ignored as just transient tiredness. Many women having a heart attack will complain of feeling “flu-like” symptoms of nausea, sweating, fatigue, and shortness of breath, and they’ll lie down for a nap and never wake up.

Lightheadedness – A feeling of being lightheaded or about to faint isn’t terribly uncommon in many benign conditions, and many women experience it on a monthly basis. However – be aware when it appears unexpectedly or unexplainedly, and/or with one or more of the other symptoms on this list.

Sweating (diaphoresis) – Heart attack does funny things to the sympathetic nervous system, which is behind reflexes such as sweating and hiccups. If a lady is experiencing unexplained or excessive sweating, pay attention to anything else that might be going on with her.

Tingling or numb extremities – A feeling of numbness or “pins and needles” tingling in the extremities can be an important sign that cardiac function is being impaired and those body parts aren’t receiving enough oxygen.

Peripheral and/or central cyanosis – Often accompanies tingling or numbness, and is considered a later-stage symptom of cardiac distress and heart failure. Finger and toe tips will turn pale or blue first, and lips and gums after that. Important to remember that darker-skinned women may present cyanosis as ashen, grey, or darker purple rather than pale or blue.

Back pain – Pain between the shoulder blades, in the cervical spine, or even further down in the torso or lumbar region can be a symptom of heart attack. Alone, it isn’t that suspicious, but if it’s unrelenting and presents with any of the other symptoms above, keep a watchful eye on things.

Classic “crushing” or “tight” chest pain or pressure – Women DO experience this classic pain, too, just not as frequently as men do. This may be due to our higher pain threshold, or differences in blood volume, or maybe we’re just not sure because nobody’s bothered to really study it. Whatever the reason, some women do still experience the crushing or tightening pain, and others may experience less painful pressure or tightness that doesn’t seem to be relieved by anything.

Arm and jaw pain – Another “classic” heart attack symptom, and a bit more common than central chest pain. Unexplained pain in the left arm or shoulder, and on the left side of the neck or jaw, should not be ignored by anyone.

This is so, so important.

All too frequently, cardiac events in women are misdiagnosed for the reasons listed above, but also because we live in a culture where women’s complaints are simply not taken seriously. Unfortunately, the medical community is no exception.

Ladies, YOU MUST BE YOUR OWN ADVOCATES. You know your bodies- do not let a doctor or nurse dismiss your symptoms as “hysteria”. Demand thorough treatment, and if you find yourself in a position where you are being brushed aside, find a second opinion.

As a woman who was diagnosed young with heart disease (48), I can verify the above; be ready to fight to be taken seriously, because you may have to, unfortunately. My female cardiologist believed me immediately, but the damned receptionist had tried to gatekeep me out of an initial appointment, and none of the male cardios I’ve been to since have been nearly as ready to listen. Consider taking a male family member with you to advocate for you with a male doctor (who may well be more willing believe another man’s reported observations of you than your own self-reported symptoms–I wish that wasn’t likely to be true, but trust me, it is). Get any cardiac symptoms checked out before you ever get to the attack stage, and don’t be fobbed off with just a stress test–those are notoriously not as accurate for women.
