Add your name: Doug Ford – don’t repeal the sex ed curriculum

allthecanadianpolitics:

Why is this important?

Doug Ford promised to repeal Ontario’s comprehensive Health and Physical Education, aka Sex-Ed, curriculum – and he could do it in just under two weeks, when he becomes Premier on June 29.

The curriculum was designed and written by experts in child development, internet safety, police, and social workers, in consultation with roughly 4,000 parents. [1] It emphasizes much-needed lessons of consent, acceptance for others and sexual health. [2]

In the age of Me Too, we can’t afford to stop teaching kids about consent and acceptance. Youth deserve scientific facts and unbiased information when it comes to their health. It’s simple: society will suffer if we don’t educate children in these topics.

Opponents of the curriculum come from the extreme religious right and helped get Ford elected. [3] They’re way ahead, with a petition by Campaign Life Coalition to repeal the curriculum for the new school year with over 10,000 signatures and counting. We’ve got our work cut out for us. But despite what they argue, evidence from the UN shows that access to comprehensive sex-ed does not increase sexual activity. [4] It leads to well-informed decisions and reduces the risk of harmful sexual behaviour.

The existing curriculum goes far beyond providing age-appropriate information about sexual and reproductive health. It teaches personal safety, healthy relationships based on mutual respect and consent, and is inclusive of all children and youth who call Ontario home.

Doug Ford may have won a majority government, but we cannot let him drag Ontario backwards. If enough of us sign this petition defending the Sex-Ed curriculum, he could back down on his promise to repeal it. Will you add your name to stand up for the health and safety of children and youth in Ontario before Ford is sworn in in just a few days?

Ok so I don’t actually plan on moving out of Ontario, but lots of people are saying they want to. With the lack of rent control being a big contributor. However lots plan to move to BC which…. Is also expensive?? Which makes me think of New Brunswick. Cheapest place to live in North America. So. How does that look as an option for Ontarians looking to relocate? (In terms of other stuff like healthcare, education, services, etc.)

allthecanadianpolitics:

B.C. housing market is ridiculous in the Vancouver area, but the rest of the majority of BC’s housing prices are not that bad.

Even going outside of downtown Vancouver it is cheaper to rent than Vancouver or Toronto:

Oak Bay near Victoria, Richmond and Burnaby are all cheaper to rent than Toronto or Vancouver. Its still fairly expensive, but its not any more expensive than Ontario.

I’m in student housing in Kamloops and am paying hundreds of dollars less than I would be in Toronto or Vancouver.

Also I’m paying thousands of dollars less in tuition in BC, compared to Ontario:

That’s average tuition. I’m paying about $3000-4000 per year in tuition.

New Brunswick is cheap, but the issue is this:

N.B. economic growth expected to be worst of 10 provinces in 2018

If you can get a job, I’m sure you’ll be ok in New Brunswick or in Atlantic Canada in general, but right now their economies in general are not doing great.

By contrast BC has Canada’s second largest economy.

Stuff to weigh anyways if you’re considering moving.

I’m seeing a lot of despair tonight and I’m not going to tell anyone not to process those emotions. It’s not for me to invalidate that.

What I will say is that I lived through the Mike Harris years in Ontario. They were quite nasty. Lots of strikes affected our school systems. Lots of anger, bitterness, resentment. I went to an art school. We were told the arts were a waste of time. Useless. Not relevant in an age of austerity, budget cuts. Lots of scary times. We protested. We had walk-outs. We endured. A lot of the people I grew up with became politically minded and involved because of it.

I say to those younger than me: don’t tune out, no matter how hard it might seem. You’ve got friends and allies. They’re out there. I’m scared too but one can’t go quietly into the night. Even just send an email to your MPP or an MPP in opposition who is in alignment with your values (the NDP will have a shadow cabinet as opposition with certain MPPs in charge of specific issues). Besides that, there are unions, non-governmental organizations, etc that will fight for your rights. You’ve got so many resources online that we didnt have. You can go that far beyond us, make changes happen, make yourself heard.

Please don’t give up.

I just don’t understand how people can vote for a man who has shown himself repeatedly to be sexist, racist, homophobic and just plain horrible. My future is bleak thanks to people who voted for man who didn’t even release a platform. People voted for him without even knowing his plan. I’m just disgusted.

People would rather maintain the bullshit idea that America was great than implement necessary change. They’d rather accept a terrible person to maintain their terrible standards rather than be decent humans and actually make the change this country needs. It’s super fucked up and sad.

I was referring to an election in Ontario, Canada ..but I could see how you could make the mistake. Doug Ford, the man who was elected is a big Donald Trump fan.

also the worst thing about all this is the fact that the PC’s won the popular vote by 6%. i cant believe that “regional distribution” allows 6% difference in popular vote to signify 30 more seats to the PC’s than the NDP, it’s not representative of the people at all. it’s also literally undemocratic to have a majority government even though the majority of people (60%) voted against Doug Ford

Really disappointed and afraid of the decision made by Ontario. Anyone who is a person of colour, first nations, LGBTQ+, disabled, seeking education, or deserves control over their reproductive rights is going to suffer his platform. Look around; count how many people in your family and friends alone fall into the above categories, and get angry for them. Hard times are coming, be kind, but ready to stand firm. 🇨🇦✌️
