Dan Thompson is a featured artist in the The Figurative Aritsts’ Handbook by Rob Zeller @robzellerart and Monacelli Press. Thompson graduated from the Corcoran School of Art in Washington, DC. He earned his MFA from the Graduate School of Figurative Art of the New York Academy of Art. In 2006 Dan Thompson co-founded the Grand Central Academy of Art in New York. In 2008, he co-founded the Janus Collaborative School of Art in New York. Dan Thompson has also instructed privately at Studio 126 in New York and is on the faculty of the New York Academy of Art, The Art Students League of New York, and Studio Incamminati, in Philadelphia, PA.

This is my second 2018 Earth Day piece.

Atmosphaerae is latin for “of the atmosphere”, which we certainly are. Life on Earth is very much owed to this unique 300-mile thick shield. Its greenhouse gases provide hospitable climate and weather, the mildest we’ve yet to observe in the known universe. It protects life on Earth from UV radiation and presents a buffer against meteoroids. It also offers us the means to an energy future free of oil spills and needless pollution. I wanted to present this symbiosis for what it is–and what it can be: harmony between technology and nature. We can be better, we have to continue to be better. We ARE of the atmosphere.
