is this a renaissance painting?

“Interrogation of the Zodiac Killer”
-The Ghost of Sandro Botticelli ca 2015

So I slapped some mathematics on this picture and…

The red lines divide the picture into thirds. They also mostly coincide with the doorway (and Cruz’s right hand), framing him nicely as the Main Character of this picture.

The green line was placed using the golden ratio (the ratio between parts of the picture above it and below it is close enough to 1:1.618). It also goes right under his chin (and through some reporters’ hands or tools).

The purple lines are diagonals that are framing the reporters really nicely.

I’m pretty sure you could also do something clever with a circle and the yellow doorway behind him, but I don’t have the patience to fiddle with that.

Basically, this picture has the same “maths are beautiful” aesthetic as (some well-known) Renaissance paintings.

Any tips on how to get my tumblr out there and my art noticed? Thanks!

Submitting to art blogs is one way get exposure and new followers, just remember add a link to your art blog when you submit. Also try and have your art as presentable as possible, for example avoid uploading grainy pictures taken with your phone and fix the colour and contrast levels before you post.

Here’s a few art blogs you can submit to:

  • EatSleepDraw – This is one of the most popular art blogs on tumblr and they take submissions from artists of all kinds, however due to its popularity you’ll have to be patient.
  • FuckYeahMoleskines – A blog that focuses exclusively on art created in Moleskine brand sketchbooks, and they accept art of all levels making it a good place to submit sketches.
  • Fuck Yeah Illustrative Art – Focuses on illustrative art, and they mostly post full illustrations rather than sketches.
  • Nonsense Society – They accept all kinds of art into their community, and also have great articles on how to promote your art!
  • Cross Connect Magazine – Curates an assortment of content based on submissions, featuring a selection of artists work along with a write up about them.
  • ArtistsAlley – An art feature blog that I now run myself! It mostly focuses on illustration related art and accepts all kinds of submissions from followers.
  • Art – As you may have guessed the blog with this url belongs to the tumblr staff, and they take submissions from tumblr blogs.
  • Fuck Yeah Painting! – A blog for exclusively paintings that will take submissions of your own ones.

adding to the free programs:

Sculptris (intuitive digital sculpture. you literally start with an image of a lump of clay)

MediBang Paint Pro (basically the same thing as firealpaca but I like medibang better)

and the not free programs:

Paintstorm (cheap, tons of brush customisation options)

Artrage (excellent at simulating traditional materials)

expertfieldmouse:

hey guys, paintstorm is on sale for 50% off! (it’s $10 USD right now)

I read some reviews and bought it, and I really like it so far. it gives you TONS of options to customise brushes (which is exactly what I want from a paint program bc I’m a control freak when it comes to brushes). it’s similar in quality to photoshop and clip studio paint (csp still being my favourite), but cheaper than both.

it’s a little unintuitive to set up, but I’d be more than happy to help anyone with questions. I’ll reblog this post again with a link to the sale (I don’t want this post to be hidden in tumblr’s tags) and a link to my fave brushes so far! (some defaults, some I’ve customised)

it looks like the sale is on until nov. 30 (friday), so I’ll reblog this a few times before then!

(if those don’t work for some reason, let me know and I’ll figure out another way to share them!)
